I was contacted out of the blue by Mecum Auctions about a featured car they would like photographed before it went to auction. Hearing the words “featured car” always gets me excited since it means that I will usually get to work with something special, and special this one definitely was. I soon found out that I would be shooting this beauty, a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray 427. I drove out about an hour and twenty minutes northeast of Houston, past Liberty to the small town of Devers, Texas.
This example was a very special and well kept one. It featured the original paint, which had a little more “character” than most of the fully restored cars I’ve shot, but much more respectable in my eyes. The interior had been fully restored though, and was in showroom condition – no marks, scuffs or damage anywhere. The massive 7L big block 427 V8 was shoehorned into the engine bay, looking like new. Most exciting for me was the original MSRP sticker, valuing the Corvette at $6,026.55 in 1967 dollars, still affixed to the driver’s side window. It was safe to say that this Corvette had been treated like royalty its entire life.
The owner had some beautiful property in front of his house, and we elected to shoot the Corvette right there, in order to save some time and the risk of taking this classic out onto the dangers of the open road. The paint looked perfect in the fading evening light, enhanced by multiple exposures with my CPL to cut reflections out. It’s pretty tough to make this car look bad, it is a gorgeous car from whatever angle you look.
We wrapped up the shoot shorty after sundown, and the Corvette was whisked away back to its reserved spot in the garage. I hope that the photos help it to find a new owner who will take as good care of this car as the previous ones have!
