Gene & Wendy – A walk through Houston’s Museum District

Gene and Wendy were a great couple to work with! Still very young but already celebrating their six year (that’s right, years) anniversary, they reached out to me to take some photos of them on their special day. We decided to take a walk through the musem district of Houston, since it offers up a great variety of photo opportunities.

Arriving right at 6 pm, the fading light lit up the leaves on the tall oak trees beautifully and made for a great backdrop for the couple. We walked on to the Museum of Fine Arts, where I’d planned to shoot in the patio attached to the Cafe Express in the MFAH with it’s nice bamboo-lined walls and waterfall trailing down from street level. The patio was unexpectedly closed however, so instead we snapped a few in front of the large new stone MFAH sign, which I thought had a great texture for a backdrop.

From there, we moved on to Hermann Park. Well documented by other Houston photographers, it is hard to exclude this park, which has a great setting and looks so good at sunset. We shot a few on the bridge overlooking the “lake” and on the hill which rolls down into the Miller Outdoor Theater.

In the waning light, we made our way over to the Rice University campus where we found that their vast quad in the middle of campus had already been hidden from the sun. I set up my two speedlights and we shot a few alternative shots in the high arches of the hallways. One shot, located at the end of this set, was a backlit shot where the strobe shone through between their faces as they kissed. A total accident, I was happy with the outcome of the shot and thought it was visually interesting.

Gene and Wendy were the couple that you hope for when you book these shoots. They were fun, easygoing and able to relax the entire time which made shooting very easy for me. Hopefully every couple in the future will be as easy as them!

On to the photos!

I recommend that you view the below photo full size to see the nice backlighting!
